MISSION STATEMENT: To meet the needs of the community at large
with meaningful projects and Donations. To seek opportunities to
bring the Rotary Mission to the community and inspire others to
dedicate themselves to “Service Above Self”.
2007-2008 COMMUNITY SERVICE
PROJECTS
Light the Night
Walk: Donated $500 and participated in the Light the Night Walk
which is run by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The walk is in
support of leukemia and Lymphoma Research and was held at UCLA. We are
planning to continue our participation in this worthwhile event.
Westwood Village
Public Library: We provide ongoing support of Westwood Village
Public Library through board membership at the Library. Each month, we
donate three books as gifts from the members that have birthdays in that
given month, and the Library inserts Book Plates recognizing the
donation of Rotary.
Charitable Donations: We donate to
the following organizations throughout the year. These charities are
chosen mainly due to member involvement and Board membership.
·
PACT (“Police and Community Together”) - $800
·
PATH (“People Assisting the Homeless”) - $500
·
Meals on Wheels, West LA - $500 (Our members are
volunteers who deliver meals)
·
Westside Family YMCA - $1,000
Volunteer Poll
Workers: We will continue to supply poll workers
at the polls during the general election.
Braille
Institute: Each year, we supply WVRC members and Rotaractors to
help serve food and drinks at the Braille Institute’s Christmas
luncheon. This year, we will continue this event on Friday, December
__, 2008.
Project
Earth-Angel: Angel Flight is a 501(c)(3) organization
which coordinates and solicits pilots to fly patients to and from
medical treatment throughout the western United States (from Hawaii in
the west, California Arizona and New Mexico in the south, Washington
Idaho and Montana in the North and Wyoming, Colorado and Utah in the
East). Earth Angel, a joint project of Westwood Village Rotary Club and
the Santa Monica Rotary Club, is composed of Rotarians and their spouses
who have agreed to transport patients to and from Santa Monica airport
(at the end or the beginning of an Angel Flight) and various healthcare
facilities located in Los Angeles such as St. John’s Hospital and UCLA
Hospital. The two clubs are established and furnished a small lounge
area for the patients and families to rest and relax between flights and
medical treatment which our Auxiliary keeps supplied with snacks and
drinks (water and juice). The two clubs have transported several
hundred patient to and from medical treatment since the beginning of
2007.
