Welcome to the Friendly

Meeting Thursday noon at the UCLA Faculty Center
480 Charles E. Young Drive East, Los Angeles, California 90095  USA

Minutes for Rotary Auxiliary Meeting Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Co-president Eloise Siskel welcomed members and guests at 12:45 p.m. following lunch in the Westwood home of John and Donna Heidt.  She thanked Donna and then thanked Kathie Gauld and Pat Anderson for lunch (chicken salad, fruit plate, cake and berries) and welcomed our guests including Lynn (Jessie Robinson's daughter), Ed Gauld, Gordon Fell, Ernie Wolfe and Dwight Heikkila.

Pauline Harris read the thought for the day and Eloise read a note from the Angel Flight people thanking us for our $1,000 gift toward the project.  Marie Rolf outlined the list of letters she had written to members and Margie Downie gave the treasurer's report, announcing we took in more money than we spent at the Fun Party.

Co-president Kathie Gauld showed the group a new Rotary folder which will be distributed widely.

Roz Nelson introduced our speaker, Nevin Senkan, a Westwood Rotarian born in Turkey whose career extends from archeology in Istanbul to information technology at Harvard.  Nevin discussed our Rotary humanitarian project helping impaired children in Istanbul so they can be educated.  She said the children also are aided by Turkey's second oldest Rotary Club which has 228 members, none of whom are women.  The Turkish women, incidentally, have their own Rotary group.

She suggested that a Westwood-to-Istanbul Rotary venture might be possible, adding the fare begins at $799 and a direct flight takes 13 hours.

Respectfully submitted, Pat Anderson, Recording Secretary
