PP Andrew Mukhey led the pledge and International Chair, Marsha Hunt provided our Invocation.

We had a Visiting Rotarian from Taipei, Grace Wu. Guests included Sunny with Lenny Friedman, Don's "roommate" Roslyn ;) Peter More's wife, Shirley, and Sookie, Dwight's better half. The Head Table introduced Jim Crane, PDG Bill Goodwyn, Sheri Polack, Lt. Gov Dean Reuter, and VIP Guest District Gov. Lew Bertram

PE 'Darling' Mark Rogo reiterated his desire to have members join him in Lisbon.  He also mentioned he was a bit insulted by his declined dinner invitation to Dwight- why?  He had the nerve to celebrate 35 years of marriage!  Thus resulting in a FINE of a $1/year!

Gallery Judaica was our Merchant Minute, located at 1312 Westwood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California 90024.  Info@GalleryJudaica.com  (888) 311-3636  (310) 475-1242

Lifelong resident and member of Westwood, they are the largest sellers of Ketubahs and other fine gifts, so if we are invited to a Jewish weddings or Bar Mitzvah, we know where to go! A ketubah is a Jewish wedding license or contract. They are the largest suppliers in the country of Ketubahs, which are considered an official license - no need for actual wedding ;)

Intro from President Dwight -

We learned District Governor Lew raised his family in the house John Heidt now raised his family so he has a long westside history!
Governor Lew has said, "Every year on the First of July Rotary sweeps out the leadership from top to bottom and starts over again.  The Rotary International President, 538 new District Governors and 34,216 new Club Presidents plus all the club officers are all new each year.  This year we are also adding 23 clubs to District 5280. This year is the year of the Visionaries.  Paul Harris was the first Rotary Visionary.  In 1905 he wondered if there was a way to have the business fellowship that he had experienced in the New England town where he had grown up.  His vision in answer that question was the foundation of Rotary.  It has certainly grown over the year and is changing the world. What is your vision for the growth of Rotary in your community?   Our District team and I look forward to serving with you this year and supporting your vision of the growth and success of Rotary in each of our communities and our District...

This class of District Governors call themselves Visionaries - Peace Through Service from our RI president and he shared his concept of peace especially as a survivor growing up in Japan's postwar climate.
Within Totalitarian regimes Rotary still has impact Burma, etc., peace through Service softened heart of govt.

Rotary Pres is initiating Rotary Ignite membership program. Jerry Brown in Southgate club is our liaison. The DG mentioned that Membership comes down to three letters:

  • A
  • S
  • K

Our DG has been a Rotarian for 28-29 years because he loves the ability to leverage ideas. He remembers he met a girl in third grade who they suspected had polio so essentially everyone was restricted to their homes because of fear of spread and then she passed away.  Soon after the polio vaccine was developed and it was like a magic wand had been waved over the US. Someone in the Phillipines had the idea to ask Rotary to help vaccinate kids and it spread and spread to a worldwide initiative. Polio plus was then founded and funded by the Rotary Foundation.

Charity Navigator gives Rotary International their highest rating.

27 years ago, PDG Bill Goodwyn started the Foundation Ball.  This year it is a masquerade Ball at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles with silent and online auctions. It's going to be a great party and he encourages everyone to attend.

All of the people in the 80's did not believe Rotary could eradicate polio especially in India.  On Jan 13, 2011 the last case of Polio was reported in India.  On Oct 10, 2012 there were only 162 cases of polio in total, in the world! That one member in the Philippines changed the world from 350,000 cases to 162!

If we see a need, let's make a change.  Actions like giving a wheel chair change a life.  But also, giving  a bicycle we can see not just fun and the joy of life but how these gifts enhance education and then life. We all, everyone has the power to change the world.  Have fun while working. Nice quote at end about giving your best, Lew's list of, and the Noah's ark lessons. Don't miss the boat. We're all in the same boat. Plan ahead it wasn't raining when he built it, Stay fit, Don't listen to critics, just get on with job

There are now 65 clubs and 2700 total District members in our District. One remarkable thing that has happened recently: Manhattan Beach changed from noon meeting to morning increased from 30 members to now 116. On July 1 our District Club grew by 50% In 1957 clubs were expanding so district 5280  was moved to District 5260. With Valley clubs declining, clubs from the Santa Clarita to San Fernando merged back into ours and WVRC is their 43rd club visit!

Thank Mark Rogo for wonderful effort on the District Governor book!!
