											The last week of Promote
											International Convention Month
started with our May 31 meeting.

It was another lovely day in
											Westwood Village, and we were
greeted by Mark Block as we came in.
The pledge was led by Past
											President (PP) Eric Loberg, and
											President Elect (PE) Dwight Heikkila
											gave the invocation.

Jane Mulato was a guest of Peggy
											Bloomfield.

											Head Table:
Toshi and PP Yoshi Setoguchi, PP
											Mike Newman, President Ed Jackson
											and PE Dwight Heikkila.

											PP Steve Scherer presented Cadet
Edson Diaz, winner of the army saber
in UCLA ROTC, to the club.

											 Announcements:
											Sally Phillips’ son requests
that we do not phone Sally or visit
her in the hospital because she
											needs more rest.
The chemo is helping with the
pain but she has limited energy.
											He suggests that notes to
											their home (1368 Jonesboro Drive,
Los Angeles 90049) or emails to him
											(firemedic1@gmail.com)
will get to her quickly and be
											received gratefully.

											Incoming leaders attended the
											District Assembly on Saturday, and
are looking forward to using what
											they’ve learned to continue
											improving our club.

											The annual District Rotaract Ciao
											Awards & Installations is just
											around the corner!

											They will be recognizing
											high-achieving clubs, officers, &
members, as well as digging in to a
											delish Mexican cuisine buffet.

We have had the honor of bringing
											home every award consecutively for
the past 2 years & this will be the
											best year yet!

Just a few of the awards Bruin
											Rotaract has been awarded are:

												Club of the Year

												Best International Service
												Project

												The Spirit of Rotaract

												District Rotaract Advisor's
												"Club of the Year"

												Best Community Service Project

												Meredith Olsen Scholar Winners

											Meredith Olsen Scholar winners will
also be honored that night & we have
a few of our very own phenomenal
											Bruin Rotaractors who were
											nominated!

Please come celebrate the end of the
AMAZING Rotary year with the entire
Rotaract District of South Bay &
											Greater Los Angeles, Wednesday
night, June 13th, from 7-9pm, at El
											Torito Restaurant in Santa Monica.

											PP and 4th Quarter
											Program Chair Michael Newman
											introduced our speaker, Dr. Yoshi
											Setuguchi.

The Yosh Setoguchi story is one that
we would like to see happen again
and again and again and again and
											represents what should happen when
we reach out in the community.

In 1954, Yosh was student body
											president at University High School
											and received an honorary membership
in the Westwood Village Rotary Club.
By the time he was to
graduate he had no idea that he
											would be working in medicine.
But Dr. Milo Brooks of the
											Westwood Village Rotary Club saw
that Yosh had great capabilities in
											medicine, becoming his mentor.

Yosh became the foremost doctor in
											pediatric prosthetics, having
a stellar career at UCLA medical
											school and hospital.

After completing his career UCLA, he
											started a similar program at
											Shriners Hospital in Los Angeles.

In between the two careers Yoshi
											created an exceptionally exciting
											career with the Westwood Village
											Rotary Club, leading and running
											several district programs for
											decades.

Yosh had much more to talk to us
about his work, but as a veteran
past president of the club, he
looked at the clock and decided to
end his program with a summary.—YOE Ed Jackson |
